How do you use and airlock for fermentation
Remove the cap and the protective foam insert. Discard the insert. Fill the inside of the airlock 1/2 way with water.
Put the cap back on and insert the tip of the airlock into the mason jar lid, bucket lid, carboy lid, etc. Make sure there is a tight seal.
Shameless plug - specially-designed mason jar lids with airlocks for fermenting activities involving mason jars.
Gasses are released during the fermentation process. You will see bubbles forming and escaping through the water in the airlock
Airlocks prevent oxygen from entering the ferments. Oxygen will ruin the fermentation process.
Every now and then, remove the airlock to "burp" the ferment, check on your progress and release pressure (this step may not be required depending on your project).
